the spheres, seattle, united states of america

The spheres, located in Seattle, USA. is an alternate work space for amazon employees. This space is an experiment to provide more flexible and free office space. An alternative to coorporate cubicle oriented pigeon hole office spaces. The three spheres below house the most interesting niches to sit, to think, to pause, to work, and to rewind and recharge. In 2018, during my visit to Seattle, I got a chance to visit this space. The spheres house a multi layered botanical park within them with a series of tree houses floating amidst about 40,000 plants and a huge vertical garden. With few plates at varied levels to house hierarchy of seating spaces. Surrounded by tall highrise buildings all around, this trio of sphere provides a respite.

Each level holds a series of work and gathering spaces, as one walks up the stairs one encounters several plants, and a huge vertical garden. On level one one stumbles upon a series of cafe chairs and tables alongside a coffee and snacks cafe. The walk is guided by some distinct sound of water from a stone water fall. The botanical garden is neatly labelled identifying each plant species.

From cafe chairs, to ledges, to work space tables, to lounge chairs, this space offers a seating for each mood type. For someone who wants to do serious thinking, to someone who wants to have a sip of coffee while working on a laptop, to someone who wants to gaze at the greens as they relax their mindbefore jumping on to next assignment.

Three kinds of tree houses float within these spheres becoming group chatting and group conversation spaces.

One of the spheres houses a permanent exhibit which explains the working and the details of construction of the three spheres.
